Of all human emotions, fear is one that has a role in our survival: it told ancient cave men to run from the tiger. Yet, what was supposed to protect us has been the cause of our crippling. A lot has been said about how to handle this. ‘Conquer your fear’ is a common phrase. Battle it, overcome it and eliminate it. The question arises: Is it really possible to eliminate what is essentially a physiological process designed for our own protection?
One thing is clear, it is not easy to live in fear. Unfortunately, it’s not so easy to get rid of it either. We are hardwired to experience it at one time or another. So what is the solution?
Going against negative feelings only creates more conflict. It is the wrong approach. You have to be in harmony with what is. So if someone says be against fear, it is not proper. Do not be against anything. Just be aware. Learn from fear what it wants you to learn. If you can learn to assess a situation properly, without trying to avoid it nor attract it, then you will be in control of it. The situation will have no control over you.
Survival in the modern world, unlike in the cave-man times, has little to do with running from tigers. Fear today manifests in different ways. Executives are expected to reach the corporate goals, within the set time frame. Hence, their inner conversation is how to handle the fear arising out of a possible failure.
Just pause and learn to look at fear. You have your goal and you have your plan to reach it. Why occupy your mind with the fear of failure? Your mind can either be supportive or it can interfere. Observe how the mind is not supporting you but rather interfering with your aims to reach your goal. When you have to reach your corporate goals, learn to be committed to their achievement. Do not indulge in the doubting mind. Then, fear will not block you. One must have this much discipline.
If you live a conscious life, you will find there are deeper layers to yourself. If you live in the lower centres, then fear, anger, jealousy, etcetera is the outcome. If you live in the higher centres, then commitment, love, creativity, passion for innovation will be the outcome. Be aware of the deeper layers in yourself. Why be limited by unproductive conclusions?
The etymological meaning of discipline is learning. So learn how to use the mind and not get used by it. In the spiritual sense, going beyond mind and using intelligence is true awakening.
